In a previous and very popular post I reproduced the first floor of the set of Roseanne but the lingering question won’t leave my head – what about the SECOND floor? Every way I’ve looked at it I can’t make any kind of sense out of it. It simple doesn’t fit together in any way shape or form. Where does the staircase lead to? Are the kids rooms opposite each other or parallel? And WHERE, exactly, do the doors in DJ’s rooms lead to?
I’ve always thought when looking at the house the girls room was on the left side and DJ’s was on the right but the windows and doors made no sense at all to me. Recently though while watching a season marathon I decide that it has to be the opposite putting DJ’s room above Dan and Roseanne’s which is on the left of the house. So that being said the windows that we see on the show are actually facing the rear of the house instead of the front, so trying to make them coordinate with the outside of the house isn’t possible.
So this is where I need reader participation! I am going to attempt a 3-D render of the entire Conner property but I need YOUR help. We need to figure out exactly how the second floor fits together as a cooperative effort. Post comments on this page or write to me at [email protected]!
ALSO – In the episode where Fisher beats up Jackie, Darlene walks in on Jackie in the bathroom from DJ’s room. Jackie was looking for something of Darlene’s to wear so the two rooms must be connected by the bathroom, that also explains how sometimes they enter from the bathroom.
One of the bedrooms is directly above the master bedroom. There’s an episode where Becky and Mark are staying in the girl’s room and Darlene stays with DJ and Darlene is making the bed squeak and Becky says “Very Funny, Darlene!” This whole floor plan has been bugging me for years and years! I’m glad you are dedicated to work it out for us fans!
Love Roseanne ! About the upstairs floor plan. The bathroom could still be shared with the bedrooms both facing the street and a hallway between them . think of the hallway. one comes up the stairs and makes a right , then another right for a hallway that separates .
the first wall upon going upstairs may be the wall for a shared bathroom for both bedrooms with no access that as we can see from the hall. at any rate .. think of the plumbing . Most homes have bathroom plumbing close , not running too far . It may be their bathroom is pretty much located above the downstairs bathroom.
Both bedrooms have a street facing window.

The actual house exists in Indiana, so the floorplan there would explain everything except for liberties taken. Doubtless liberties were taken. The Rubbles’ house, identical to the Connors’, doesn’t exist in the real Indiana neighborhood but all houses seen through the window and front door do exist. Great liberties were taken with The Brady Bunch house, and Sherrif Taylor’s house on Andy Griffith Show. Forget about trying to deduce the floorplan; it ain’t possible. My guess is, it’s deliberately distorted for feng shui purposes, the balance of the set scenes plus familiar locations for cameras. You can’t achieve that with a real house. The time Roseanne blew up the house actually happened. Everyone was killed, notably the girl who played Darlene, whose head was found a block away impaled on someone’s exterior rear view mirror. After the explosion, doubles were used whose appearance changed. The first DJ was run over by a studeo truck and squashed like a housecat, which is why he was only in the first episode.
What dosent make sense about the upstairs is dj’s room. do they share a bathroom or do they each have there own? not only that, but remember the episode where dj was spying on molly through his window? that means his window has to be on the left or right of the house. dont forget about that. im an avid roseanne watcher and it has never made sense to me, because really dj only had a bathroom door in the “beat up” jackie episode.

the 2nd floor is the one that hurts my head. i always thought the rooms were parallel as shown by their doors on the top of the stairs.. but as we all said, the rooms are also connected by the bathroom. so yeah i hope you all can figure it out and save me :))
I’ve got all the seasons on DVD so I’m going to try and find exactly how many contradictions to the upstairs floor plan there are. There is NO way that it fits, the downstairs barely fits with the exterior but the upstairs doesn’t at all. I thought I had it figured out as the windows in the girl’s room faced the back of the house but there was the episode where they threw all their clothes out and they landed in the front yard. I could rattle on all the things that don’t make sense about it but it would take forever. The first floor is the only one with a solid floor plan.
YES i thought the same thing about the clothes being thrown out the windows and it being in the front of the house! maybe we have to accept that it wont ever make sense. it will never fit. haha.
I emailed Roseanne on her blog and asked her about the second floor.

The grinch in all this is that Dan regularly goes up the stairs from the living room and then enters the girls’ room right after pivoting his body to his right. We are in the girls’ room watching this from a usual camera position inside the room. As we see it, Dan comes down a hall into the room. The two windows are to our right. They are the pair of corner windows on the left side of the second floor of the house if you are on the street facing the house. As we see the windows from inside the girls room, the one on the left is the street window and the one on the right is the window just around the corner. You can see this on the real house in Indiana, and maybe on the images of the house in the tv show. What is crazy about this is that it is true to the floorplan of the house EXCEPT for the direction of Dan’s entry. Dan should be entering from the living room staircase, but instead, he’s always entering from the opposite direction. Hence all the confusion. That staircase is positioned so that he should actually be seen stepping up into the girls’ room when he enters. Instead, he’s seen pivoting as if he has walked down a hallway from the center of the house. Now, if that’s the case, that there is a hallway where Dan enters, then the stairway from the living room rises to the center of this small house and the girls’ room is down a hall, as is another room on the other side of the porch roof, as is the boy’s room BEHIND these two rooms. This is an AW”FUL lot of waste space for a tiny house like this as seen in the Indiana picture. The boy’s room entrance might be figurable a number of ways from this, but I’d guess the boy has little or no privacy. There is apparently no door onto his room, just a hallway entrance. However, at times I’ve figured Dan absolutely must be entering the girls’ room from a fire escape on the driveway. Furthermore, there is NO way the rooms are as big as they are in the studio. To do that, the girls’ room would have to fill the whole upper story. BTW, there is a missing episode in which Darlene gets well and thoroughly molested sitting in some biker guy’s lap in the living room. The whole frigging house was a frigging bedroom.

I am so glad I found this site. I love watching Roseanne. It took me a while to figure out the master bed/bath originally, and there are still some mysteries, such as the closet door that would lead to a closet outside of the outer wall since it is around the corner from the bathroom entrance. As well, the front living room window is so large from the outside shot, that there is no way the master bedroom could fit in the space left, plus the bedroom has a window on the far wall of the room across from the entrance wall, which means it is on the front side of the house.
But my real quandary now is the upstairs. I am watching “Fathers and Daughters” where it seems pretty clear that the kids do not share a bathroom. The entrance to the girl’s room is on the same wall as the small window (which can’t be front facing according to the outside photos (full size windows). The small window cannot be on a flat outer-edged wall since that hall creates an corner, so I can’t figure out how it works.
If the large windows are supposed to be the front, then the bathrooms are on the outer sides and there should be smaller windows facing each other on the front. If the larger windows are supposed to be in the back, then the bathroom are next to each other (or possibly, but not obviously, shared), and the entrances are on the outer sides of the house with some weird indents where the small windows are so they face towards the sides. If the large windows are facing the sides, then the small windows and entrances would be on the front, and that isn’t in agreement with the outside view.
I like it when it feels logical enough that it could be real, but just opened up a bit as a set needs to be. This just bugs me too.

I really think that is exactly the point of the architecture – it seems logical enough to make sense but doesn’t exactly fit. Roseanne inserted a lot of observational jokes, things that only avid watchers would pick up. Like for example:
The set of the porch doesn’t match the cut scene picture of the house
The set the front of the Lunch Box shown when Darlene draws the chalk outline of the cows doesn’t match the cut scene restaurant
DJ’s room makes NO sense
I’m sure I could go on but it’s early and I’m weary.
